Since March we’ve been supporting a fantastic cause with B1G1, providing women and girls living in poverty in Kenya, with female hygiene kits. Many women and girls simply cannot afford basic sanitary products and have to use unhygienic materials such as old rags, which can lead to infections. Often, girls stay at home as they are embarrassed to attend school, meaning they miss a week of school every month. Many fall behind and end up dropping out of school. By supporting this cause, we’re able to help improve hygiene, comfort and even education by helping girls to access basic essentials.

Our aim was to donate 15,000 days’ worth of help, giving girls access to basic essentials. We’re pleased to have surpassed this aim, donating a total of 18,101 days’ worth of help.

Preventing child blindness in Kenya

B1G1 Kenya

Our new project to support is focused on preventing child blindness by distributing a daily dose of vitamin A supplements to children in Turkana, Kenya. In the early stages of development, it is important that a child receives the correct nutrition. Access to a proper diet is extremely limited in Turkana as people are nomadic pastoralist.

There are two programmes; one in Nariokotome where the mobile clinic travels between 8 different outreach areas and visits 24 villages once per month. This mobile clinic provides services to almost 6,000 children and all of them will be given the vitamin supplements. In addition, there is a smaller Lobur mobile clinic programme providing Vitamin A monthly to 1300 children at the 14 nursery schools.

We’re aiming to provide 50,000 daily doses of vitamin A to children in Kenya.
