10GBaseT – Can this be run over Cat5e?

15/12/2011

10GBase T is a standard that provides 10Gbit/s connections over unshielded or shielded twisted pair cable over distances of up to 100 metres. Whilst you need to use Cat6a or Cat7 cable to reach the full distance potential, the goods news is that if your data centre already has Cat5e or Ca6 cabling installed, you may not need to upgrade just yet.

Distances:

100m on Cat6a and Cat7 cable types

55m on Cat6 cable which is already deployed in many data centres

Protect Your Fibre with a Shuttered Connector

28/11/2011

A common request we receive from our clients is to send spare ferule dust caps for their fibre cables, typically for those being used for temporary links. We understand the problem, the dust caps are tiny you take them off just before you plug them into your equipment, pop them in your pocket and when you next retrieve the cables you’re wearing differents jeans and they are lost! The end faces then get contaminated or worse; scratched and then you have a defective connector.

We are working on solutions to help with this and several will be appearing on our website over the coming weeks.

Armoured Fibre Patch Cables Now Made in the UK

4/11/2011

Traditional fibre optic cables are simply too delicate to survive the demands of harsher environments experienced when venturing beyond the confines of the data cabinet and server room.  What’s needed is a durable kink and crush resistant equivalent to the standard 3mm patch cable; we have something even better.

Made from high quality components our armoured fibre optic cables consist of a fibre pair housed in a stainless steel tube with Kevlar, helical metal tape and metal braid mesh for additional protections contained within a LSZH outer-jacket.  The armouring of the fibres gives excellent resistance against kinking, crushing and rodents.

Who Needs the Pied Piper?

21/10/2011

Rats have been in the news last week after pesky rattus norvegicus chewed through Virgin Media fibre optics causing an outage in East Scotland. The sharp toothed little critters even came back for more fibre optic goodness causing a secondary outage!

It’s a common misconception that rats actually eat the cables, instead they use the insulation to line their nests or chew it to wear down their constantly growing teeth. There are several ways to protect cables against rodents
